In 1998, Pars Special Economic Energy Zone was established under authorization of the Cabinet, to utilize gas from the South Pars Field in a bid to develop oil, gas, petrochemical and thier related downstream industries. Covering as area of 30,000 hectares, the zone lies east of Bushehr province, and 105 km away from the maritime South Pars gas Field.
South Pars area has one of the world's largest independent gas fields. it is located on the Iran-Qatar joint maritime in the Persian Gulf. the field has an area of 9,700 square km. Holding more than 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of condensates, the field contains 8% of the world’s gas and over 48% of Iran's total known gas reserves.
